Support climate action

Understand your impact and support solutions

When you fly Icelandair, we’ll provide the tools so you can better understand your flight’s estimated carbon emissions. We can also help you support impactful climate solutions around the world.

Make a difference by supporting impactful climate projects, selected by Icelandair

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do. When it comes to the climate, our primary focus is on actions that directly contribute to the lowering of our emissions, such as our transition into new, more efficient fleet and our extensive fuel-efficiency program. However, as part of our climate action efforts, we also want to help our customers to better understand the carbon footprint of their flights and give them the opportunity to support impactful climate solutions around the world. We are delighted to partner with CHOOOSE to easily connect our customers with quality carbon projects that are certified to the highest global standards.

FAQ

How we estimate carbon emissions?

The emission estimations you can view here follow the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Recommended Practice - RP 1726 to calculate the estimated carbon emissions associated with a passenger's flying on a particular flight. The RP 1726 calculation methodology takes into account multiple parameters including aircraft fuel consumption, seat configuration, cabin class, aircraft type, and historical load factors from more than 400 airlines (precision of the calculation depends on the input data). You can learn more about these parameters and the calculation methodology here. The estimation results you see here are offered for informative reasons only, and they do not represent the actual emissions generated from your flying.

What is carbon offsetting and what are carbon offsets and carbon credits?

Carbon offsetting is a mechanism that enables individuals and organizations to advance climate action by supporting certified third-party projects that contribute to the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Certified carbon projects issue carbon credits, which act as an instrument for selling or trading the project’s associated removal or reduction impact. Each carbon credit represents a single unit of GHG emissions (being one (1) tonne carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e)) that is reduced or removed from the atmosphere or the carbon cycle and that would not have taken place without the prospect of selling such carbon credits. A unit of GHG emissions can be reduced or removed through various methods or project types. The purchase of a carbon credit enables the buyer to contribute to these certified carbon projects, and one often purchases credits in an amount equivalent to an estimated carbon footprint. While this act of “carbon offsetting” does not reduce the emissions associated with your flying, it does provide needed financing for these certified carbon projects. A carbon project's ability to issue carbon credits depends on a set of rigorous conditions – in order for a project to issue credits, the emission reductions or removals must be validated as additional, measurable, auditable, permanent, and unique. Not all country or regions are currently home to carbon projects - and some countries and regions have far more than others. The carbon projects that Icelandair has chosen to support are all certified, listed on internationally recognized registries, and have been through further vetting with our partners. At the moment, there is a very limited number of carbon projects in Iceland, and none of them meet our current requirements or processes. We will continue to monitor the market, and look forward to including more local projects if and when they become available

What are the different types of carbon offsetting projects?

There are different types of carbon offsetting projects, which vary based on the way they remove or reduce carbon. Common project types include:

  • Nature-based solutions that preserve and enhance our natural ecosystems’ carbon management capabilities, through a combination of conservation and / or improved management of natural resources. Some projects remove carbon from the atmosphere or carbon cycle, whereas others enhance the storage of carbon in natural sinks – reducing emissions – through conservation efforts. These often focus on oceans (“blue carbon”), soil, or forests.
  • Community projects that empower local communities in reducing their emissions through the advancement of energy access, energy efficiency, water access, and waste management. These projects often provide benefits that extend beyond environmental sustainability to support the social side of sustainability, too.
  • Renewable energy projects that reduce carbon by accelerating the generation of cleaner energy and displacing carbon-intensive sources of electricity. The sale of carbon credits from these projects make it economically feasible to develop renewable energy assets that would otherwise not be possible.

How is your contribution used?

When people or organizations make contributions towards climate solutions, the funds are used to purchase verified carbon offsets from projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The price paid is the total cost to deliver the carbon offsets.
